Question: Have you already packed up? And our answer was still the same: No, it’s still time. For many people, our calm was incomprehensible because when they pack for vacation (where they spend most of 14 days), they need a minimum of a month to pack and sometimes have difficulty meeting a weight limit (I think it’s about 15 kg for low-cost flights) and about 25 kg for long-haul flights). We will be away for 1 year and on a place where 4 seasons alternate and we have a weight limit of up to 25 kg. Each of our backpacks weighed 8 kg. Originally we wanted to have one backpack together, but unfortunately, the winter jackets and shoes are bulkier than summer stuff. And when it comes to packaging, we were done 1 hour before leaving to the airport. But basically the most important thing is always a passport, a credit card and in our case a visa because we don’t have a return ticket.

What did I pack to an 8 kg backpack?

  • Winter and spring jacket
  • Winter boots
  • Sweater, sweatshirt
  • Cap, scarf, gloves
  • T-shirts, tank tops, turtleneck
  • Shorts, 3/4 leggings
  • Jeans, warmer pants
  • Socks, underwear
  • Exercise Gloves
  • Pareo, swimsuit, towel 2 expanders for exercise
  • Hair dryer
  • First aid kit
  • Tape
  • Hair and body soap and soap for the laundry
  • And as an eco-friendly man, I still have packed bags for pastries, fruit and vegetables, a cloth bag and a Czech net-bag.

Martin has a similar composition, he has less the number of pieces, but it is true that his stuff is larger.

What did Martin pack to an 8 kg backpack?

  • Winter jacket
  • Sweatshirt
  • Caps, gloves
  • T-shirts
  • Shorts, tracksuits, jeans
  • Swimsuit
  • Socks, underwear
  • Towel
  • Cosmetic bag

I’d say we have just enough stuff without any uselessness. And we still have space in our backpacks if we will need to buy something. We packed our cabin bags too. We packed electronics (PC, iPad, iPod, mobile phones), a cosmetic bag (in my case), a bottle for water, turn cups, some sweeties from our family, pillows, and slippers.

What did we leave at home?

About NZ there is a lot of information about how they have strict immigration officials in so-called biosecurity. Although we do not know what the truth is yet, for sure we did not want to create complications after arriving at the airport, so we left a few things at home. And what can you expect from biosecurity?

Boots – You must have a perfectly cleaned sole and no clay in the sample.

Plants products – including bamboo straws, brushes, wood products (bowls, cutlery ..) so we left coconut bowls, spoons, and bamboo straws at home.

It’s not completely forbidden, but these products are on the so-called risk list. It depends on the official to evaluate the product. It can be thrown away. In the better case, the product will be sent for so-called “disinfection”. At best, nothing will be dealt with by the clerk.

We will see who will check us out on arrival 🙂
